Gas Log Fireplaces

← Compare all fireplace types

Gas logs are a burner-and-log system installed in a compatible fireplace. Sets can be vented or vent-free; the logs’ appearance does not tell you which.

What you may see

Manufactured logs arranged on a gas burner or grate inside a masonry or approved factory-built fireplace. Some contemporary systems use other decorative media.

Vented or vent-free?

Vented sets require a functioning chimney and the venting arrangement specified by the manufacturer. Vent-free sets have different approval and installation requirements. Verify the burner label and manual.

Controls and ignition

Some sets are match-lit; others have a safety pilot, electronic ignition, remote or wall control. A gas key or remote alone cannot identify the log-set type.

How to confirm

Record the burner manufacturer and model as well as the fireplace information. Compatibility depends on both. Leave logs in their specified positions; moving them can affect burner operation.

How to measure your fireplace for gas logs

With the fireplace off and completely cool, record these four inside measurements in inches. Measure the firebox—not the decorative mantel or outside hearth.

Top view: measure A across the inside front, B across the rear, and C straight from front to back.Front view: D is the clear opening height from the firebox floor to the top of the opening.
A · Front width
Inside width at the front opening.
B · Rear width
Inside width across the back wall near floor level.
C · Depth
From the inside front opening straight back to the rear wall along the floor.
D · Opening height
From the firebox floor to the underside of the opening’s top. Note any lower obstructions.

Have these ready: A ___ in · B ___ in · C ___ in · D ___ in, an overall photo, and the fireplace brand/model if available.

Dimensions are a starting point. The selected burner, logs and controls must meet their manufacturer’s minimum firebox dimensions and compatibility requirements. Required rear width may be measured at a specified burner depth. Note door tracks, gas piping and other obstructions; do not remove parts or move existing gas logs to measure. Sealed direct-vent units are not candidates for a generic replacement log set.
