Wood-Burning Fireplaces

← Compare all fireplace types

These burn real firewood and exhaust smoke through a chimney. They may be built from masonry or use a listed factory-built metal fireplace and chimney system.

What you may see

A firebox with a grate and a chimney above, often with a screen or glass doors. Factory-built units can have brick-pattern panels that resemble masonry.

Masonry or factory-built?

A masonry fireplace and a factory-built fireplace have different construction and approved components. Decorative stone or brick on the room-facing wall does not establish which type is behind it.

Gas equipment can be misleading

A wood-burning fireplace may contain a gas log lighter or an installed gas log set. Gas piping alone does not mean the unit was built as a dedicated gas fireplace.

How to confirm

Look for accessible manufacturer information and share an overall photo. If gas equipment has been added, have the appliance and installation identified before deciding which fuel or service is appropriate.
