Vent-Free Gas Fireplaces

← Compare all fireplace types

Vent-free or ventless gas fireplaces do not require a chimney or exhaust pipe. They use room air and release heat, moisture and combustion products into the room.

What you may see

Usually an open-front gas firebox with a specifically approved vent-free burner and logs. Appearance can closely resemble a vented fireplace.

Venting clues

A dedicated vent-free fireplace does not need an exhaust vent. However, an approved vent-free log set may be installed in a compatible existing fireplace that has a chimney. The presence of a chimney alone does not identify the burner.

Controls and ignition

Controls may be manual, thermostatic or remote-operated, depending on the model. Confirm the exact burner and control system from its label rather than assuming from the switch.

How to confirm

Look for vent-free or unvented identification in the rating information and manual. Room suitability, ventilation, clearances and local requirements matter. Never treat a vented gas fireplace as vent-free by blocking its vent.
