Also called natural-vent fireplaces, these draw combustion air from the room and send exhaust through a B-vent system that terminates above the roof.

What you may see
Many have an open front or operable glass doors. Other designs also exist, so glass or door style is only a clue—not a definitive test.
Venting clues
A gas vent runs upward to a roof termination. Unlike direct vent, a B-vent fireplace is not a sealed combustion system drawing its combustion air from outdoors.
Controls and ignition
A wall switch, gas valve and pilot system are common, but some models use different controls or ignition arrangements. These features can also appear on direct-vent units.
How to confirm
The rating label and installation manual identify the appliance and approved venting. Follow that model’s instructions for door position during use; do not assume every glass-door fireplace operates the same way.
